APPLICATIONS
FINAWAX-C is used in nearly all major plastic processing operations, finding application as a lubricant, processing and mould release agent, anti-block and slip additive and as dispersant for pigments and flame retardants.
EXTRUSION
In extrusion processing, FINAWAX-C imparts uniform melt-flow and prevents surging at the die face, thereby contributing to close dimensional conformance of the sheet or profile. In addition, it provides greater throughput rate and lowers power requirements. Surface character of the extrudates is smooth and blemish-free.
MOULDING
In moulding operations, FINAWAX-C is used as a mould release agent and processing aid. The ease of plastification and enhanced flow afforded by FINAWAX-C reduces machine load and mould cycle times.
The mould release properties significantly improve the economics of moulding operations by eliminating costly stoppages due to sticking and improperly ejected parts. The versatility of FINAWAX-C is demonstrated by its use not only in thermoplastic blow and injection moulding formulations, but also in thermoset moulding and potting compounds.
CALENDERING
Because of its balanced internal / external lubricating action FINAWAX-C widely used in calendering. The major uses are in ABS and both flexible and rigid PVC sheet and film. Desired gloss levels and optimum surface characteristics are met when FINAWAX-C is incorporated into the formulation. Overall, it is the unique balanced lubricating effects of FINAWAX-C which result in improved melt flow during processing, easier fluxing and improved calender roll release.
MAJOR RESIN APPLICATIONS
POLYVINYL CHLORIDE [PVC]
FINAWAX-C used extensively in most rigid and flexible PVC applications such as siding, profile, sheet, film, wire and cable. It is incorporated during the compound blending cycle at use levels from 0.5% to 2%. FINAWAX-C can be classified as a combination internal / external lubricant, aiding plastification and flow while providing metal release properties also.
FINAWAX-C known for its "forgiveness", providing a wide latitude in compounding and processing variables. In extrusion processing, it consistently promotes high output rates, excellent surface character and low energy requirements. The purity and uniformity of FINAWAX-C ensures consistent, reproducible product without fear of plate-out, die drool or surging.
RIGID PVC
Generally the use of ordinary amide waxes for rigid PVC causes a marked deterioration in the thermal stability of PVC which is manifested in poorer colour retention in the thermal stability test and in lower final stability.
With FINAWAX-C , such problems need not be feared due to its very high thermal stability in PVC and hence it has got an advantage over ordinary amide waxes.
In rigid PVC processing FINAWAX-C , in the presence of adequate internal lubricants, provides external lubricating and release effects and in particular improves the surface finish of the end products.
In rigid PVC film, FINAWAX-C imparts more slip and higher surface brilliance. Generally the use level is 0.1 - 0.5 phr.
PLASTICIZED PVC
In plasticized PVC, FINAWAX-C acts as an ANTIBLOCKING AGENT With higher levels of FINAWAX-C , the antiblocking effect is increased but the printability and weldability of the film may be impaired. Hence, use level of FINAWAX-C should be carefully adjusted to balance the needs. Generally 0.3 to 1.0 phr of FINAWAX- C is used in plasticized PVC extruded / calendered articles.
ABS
FINAWAX-C leads to improved processability to ABS resin systems at a use level of 0.25% to 4.0%. It is used to provide easier fluxing and enhance overall flow characteristics. High quality, glossy surfaces are obtained.
In the injection moulding of ABS, FINAWAX-C provides excellent mould release, good gloss and exceptional surface character.
POLYSTYRENE
In PS and HIPS, FINAWAX-C acts as an external flow promoting lubricant and also assists in mould release in injection moulding. FINAWAX-C is generally used @ 0.1 - 0.5 phr
Addition of a small quantity of FINAWAX-C on PS granules before processing, considerably improves free-flowing properties and feed behaviour in processing machines. Addition of 0.05 -0.1 phr is generally enough for this purpose.
FINAWAX-C can be applied onto the granules by tumble-blending with the help of wetting agents like FINALUX-G3 .
FINAWAX-C finds application as a release agent in the moulding of polystyrene and styrene-based co-polymers and alloys. It is used as a foam stabilizing agent in EPS. Use levels are typically 0.1 % - 0.25%.
POLYOLEFINS
In polyolefins, FINAWAX-C functions as an external lubricant particularly in slit die extrusion. e.g. PE-HD flat film.
FINAWAX-C improves flow properties of polymer melts and facilitates further processing of film into tape. Use level is 0.3-1.0 phr.
The release effect of PE-LD film for backing self-adhesive coatings can be considerably enhanced by the addition of 2-3 phr. of FINAWAX-C . For granule processors, who cannot homogeneously incorporate FINAWAX-C powder; granulated FINAWAX-C based Systems can be produced by masterbatch mfrs.
This antiblocking system is suggested for use in production films and injection moulded articles from PE-LD/PVA co-polymers to reduce surface tackiness.
FINAWAX-C is used for its antiblocking and slip characteristics in film and sheet applications based on polypropylene and low density polyethylene.
It is widely used as a pigment and flame retardant dispersant in all types of olefins. FINAWAX-C can be added directly to the pigment or flame retardant at levels upto 25% of their use level.
TALC-FILLED POLYPROPYLENE
FINAWAX-C at 0.5% - 2% improves heat aging stability and flow properties when used with phenolic antioxidants and thioester synergists in talc-filled polypropylene. FINAWAX-C improves mould release properties and surface appearance.
POLYAMIDES
FINAWAX-C is used at low levels (0.1% - 0.25%) to improve mould release in the injection moulding of various polyamides. At higher Levels, it also functions as a lubricant for easy plastification. In Nylon-6 film applications, FINAWAX-C is also used as a slip and anti-blocking agent.
ENGINEERING PLASTICS
Producing adequate lubrication in engineering plastics presents problems not ordinarily found with regular plastics. The most common problem is finding a suitable product that will produce the desired effect and withstand the high temperatures needed to process these materials. The problem of lubrication and flow control becomes very demanding in case of highly filled polymers and their blends.
The processing conditions required to produce outstanding engineering plastics are just too intense for most of the common lubricants. For such applications FINAWAX-C has been engineered for engineering plastics
FINAWAX-C provides superior lubrication even at temperatures upto 260บ C. FINAWAX-C remains stable at processing temperature and maintains its performance when such polymers are reground and processed again. Its controlled compatibility provides good lubrication and release effect during processing. Due to its chemical nature and high stability, FINAWAX-C does not influence basic specifications of the polymer in which it is added.
In processing of engineering thermoplastics like POLYAMIDES and POLYACETAL, a great extent of improvement in flow properties can be achieved by FINAWAX-C . This makes it possible to produce very complex injection moulded articles from these plastics. Generally 0.2 - 0.5 phr of FINAWAX-C is used.
Immediately after processing THERMOPLASTIC POLYURETHANE (TPU) displays strong surface tackiness which hinders the release of injection moulded articles from the mould and causes them to stick together when stacked. Use of 0.3 - 1.0 phr FINAWAX-C facilitates remolding and reduces blocking of articles when stacked.
THERMOPLASTIC POLYURETHANE
This elastomer is very sticky immediately after processing. As a result, injection moulded articles are difficult to remove from the mould and block on stacking during thermoplastic PU extrusion.
The inside of extruded hose sticks together on rolling and cannot be reopened easily FINAWAX-C is useful in such applications as an internal release agent. Recommended dosage is 0.5% - 1.0%.
THERMOSETTING RESINS
The versatility of FINAWAX-C is demonstrated by its use not only in thermoplastic injection moulding formulations, but also in the thermoset moulding and potting compounds.
Thermosetting compounds eg., PF, UF, MF need effective lubricants and mould release agents. This is particularly very relevant in mineral and fiberous material filled PF compound and especially formulated for MF compounds for moulding large surface area articles like table wares.
FINAWAX-C if incorporated in such thermosets offers considerable advantage in filling intricate mould cavities and improves surface finish. Recommended dose level is about 1.0% to 1.5%.
FINAWAX-C addition increases output by reducing moulding cycle time and helps to reduce electrical power consumption by modifying the melt viscosity of thermosets while processing.
COLOUR CONCENTRATES
In colour concentrates for PS and ABS with a polymer carrier; FINAWAX-C functions as a wetting agent and viscosity modifier. FINAWAX-C is added at the level of 3-5% based on the weight of the polymer. FINAWAX-C is also suitable as a sole carrier for high % concentrates of basic pigment used for blending with PS/ABS and other engineering thermoplastics.
FINAWAX-C is an excellent pigment dispersing agent for resin systems. Coloured pigment or carbon black are put into the most suitable melted FINAWAX-C and then pelletized or solidified and cut or broken into small pieces. The pellets or pieces are put into the resin system at 1% to disperse pigments through the resin.
FINAWAX-C As Compatibilizer In Polymer Blends And Alloys: FINAWAX-C as a compatibilizer makes it possible to blend what are normally incompatible polymers. By allowing these components to intermix, one can achieve a homogeneous plastic compound with desired properties.
FINAWAX-C can be used as a compatibilizer in manufacturing polymer blends and alloys especially for PVC, Polypropylene, Polyethylene, ABS, Nylon, Acetal, Thermoplastic Polyester and Polystyrene.
FINAWAX-C powder is incorporated in Synthetic rubbers such as GRS, ABS, Hycar, Butyl and Neoprene in concentrations of 0.5%. It acts as an efficient lubricant and processing aid, detackifier and mould-release and anti-blocking agent. It tends to retard the bloom of accelerators and softeners in Butyl rubber, Hard rubber; in which FINAWAX-C is incorporated exhibits a good finish with a high surface Durometer reading. It increases the surface hardness and thereby improves the abrasion resistance; extruded stocks have an excellent finish. FINAWAX-C also improves the water-immersion and chemical resistance of rubber stocks.
Good anti-blocking and anti-tack properties are given to emulsions of synthetic resins and rubbers such as vinyls neoprene and GRS incorporated, when 1% to 3% FINAWAX-C dispersion is incorporated.
Other Application
There are several grades of FINAWAX-C specially developed to suit special applications.
FINAWAX-C is used as an internal lubricant for rubber as a water-repellent agent far the paper industry a delustering agent for increasing the flow / drop point of bitumen, asphalts, paraffins and resins.
MELTING POINT MODIFIER
FINAWAX-C is used to increase the melting points of other waxes and wax-resin blends. It is also used in industrial asphalts and tars to raise the softening point of the asphalt and inhibit cold flow. The ring and ball softening point can be raised by approximately 10% for each 1% of FINAWAX-C added.
ADHESIVE TAPES
FINAWAX-C is applied to the backs of adhesive tapes to allow slip and prevent blocking when adhesive tapes touch, such as in storage rolls.
